History

Mara Adler O’Kelly's and Giulia Utz's story could be called the “You've Got Mail” of music teaching. In December 2015, while Mara prepares for her maternity leave from her voice teaching position at St. Paul's Choir School in Englewood, NJ, Giulia gets ready to take over her students; the two meet in person only the following June. In March 2016, while each teacher alternates weekly teaching days, the fruits of an invaluable relationship are sown, not by meeting face-to-face, but by being in awe of the sounds coming out of their mutual students' mouths since they began tag-team teaching. By June, the St. Paul's students are improving their sounds, and can read music like pros, and put on a recital that moves the audience to tears! The Mara-Giulia Super-Teacher is officially formed!

Fast-forward to September 2016, Mara and Giulia meet for coffee to break down the mechanics of this super-teacher. They find, not only do they share the same love for coffee, but that they each of strengths and similarities as teachers that go together like Espresso and Milk and that. Giulia teaches her students a fail-proof breathing method, while Mara focuses on resonance and vocal projection. Voilà: super-teachers, creating super-students!

Mara Adler O'Kelly

Passionate about nurturing the next generation of musicians, soprano and teacher Mara Adler-O’Kelly first appeared on the professional stage at the age of 15 with the San Francisco Opera. She has since performed both internationally and throughout the NY/NJ/CT tri-state area, and can be heard frequently with both the Garden State Opera, and Opera Theater Montclair. To her, the most invaluable gift of this extensive performance experience has been how it has influenced her as a teacher. Her approach is student-centered and tailored to fit each student’s individual learning style. Mara holds a Master’s degree in Music Education from Columbia University and a Music Degree from the Oberlin Conservatory. She is the Music Program Director at Harmony Daycare Center in Irvington New Jersey and has helped develop several successful children’s’ choir programs throughout the state. Clips of her singing can be found at https://www.facebook.com/PianoandvoiceteacherNJ/. Along with co-founder Giulia Utz, Mara helps run Musicians for Mercy, a concert series that fundraises for youth arts education.

Giulia Utz

Contralto Giulia Utz performs in the greater New York metropolitan area as a soloist with ensembles such as the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra. She directs Schola Raritana, a women’s chorus that performs women’s medieval chant. She has directed performances at the Cloisters museum and produces early baroque music programs. Ms. Utz is also the voice instructor for St. Paul’s Choir School in Englewood, New Jersey. The information Ms. Utz brings to MusicWise is the result of years of performing, and study and practice in music and other disciplines that enhance singing performance. Students learn easy and effective techniques for managing stage fright, building confidence, and managing health conditions that can affect the singing voice. Students have successfully auditioned for theater productions, colleges, competitions, regional and state choirs, and specialized high schools. She also instructs students in beginning piano, and brings her bodywork experience to assist students in developing good playing practices. Ms. Utz holds music degrees from Youngstown State University and Sarah Lawrence College.
